About the Resource

This play was created in collaboration with the Arc Drama Club – a group of 8 to 10 year old actors, though it could easily be used with older students. It is inspired by a Russian folk tale and the music of Serge Prokofiev. It can be used to look at ensemble performance and physical theatre. It was very well received when it was performed and we had a lot of fun putting it together. Apart from a bench that was used as the Tsar’s throne and as part of the troika, all the settings were created by the performers. Costumes were inspired by the wooden nutcracker toys and were made from t-shirts and iron-on crayons. It would be a great piece for a youth group, a KS2/KS3 class project or a BTEC performance project.
