About the Resource

This is a play about the Great Plague that runs for up to 1 hour 30 minutes; it is suitable for whole school production or simply for your drama club. It moves back and forth from the present to the past (1665) to unfold its plot. It is a play for entertainment first and unapologetically puts drama and creativity before historical accuracy, though many of the events and characters featured are real.

Witches want to take over Eyam Village led by the Great Witch. They are up against their new foes, the rats, who speak in rap and rhyme and are equally determined to take the village led by the Great Rat. As if things weren’t bad enough for the Vicar of Eyam and the villagers who are battling with the plague...

The scenes are deliberately presented as both scripted and as outlines that need to be devised in rehearsals thereby giving you great artistic flexibility and creativity whilst at the same time developing improvisational and devising skills in the performers and playing to their individual strengths.

The Great Rat's speeches/raps are also recorded for you and supplied with the script download to give you an idea of the rhythms required.

Click here for a script sample and one of the Rat raps. (Sample is in PDF format - actual resource is supplied as PDF and Word document).
