About the Resource

Abuse of the poor, the elderly and the vulnerable is not a new phenomenon; the Victorian workhouse institutionalised abuse on an epic scale. ‘Workhouse’ is based on accounts given, largely by the victims, to the 1846 parliamentary committee that looked into the scandalous events at the workhouse at Andover in Hampshire. The resulting report filled two huge volumes.  It’s a true story of the abuse of power, cruelty, sexual exploitation, starvation and embezzlement.

The play uses well-known hymns of the period to add ironic comment and atmosphere. The music is included in such a way as to allow for maximum flexibility; songs can be sung by soloists, or members of cast, or by a separate choir: songs can even be sung unaccompanied. The result is a powerful, moving and sometimes funny piece of ensemble theatre.

This is a full-length play (40+ pages) which would make a stunning school production - save "Grease" or "Bugsy" till next year! Casting is flexible and allows for actors to play more than one character. It could also be edited for exam performance.
