About the Resource

Shadows of the Past is a 30 - 40 minute play for a cast of seven suitable for Key Stage 4. The characters are well developed but the cast are additionally required to work as an ensemble in each other's backstories as well to reveal the plot. Some of this ensemble work relies on physical theatre and simple juxtapositioning. There is great flexibility as to what the cast do and how they work during these ensemble sections to suit individual needs. In one sense you could perform this play as a classic ‘Whodunit’ or as in one past examination performance as a more realistic piece. Both styles have their merits.

There are detailed sections about staging and setting at various parts as well as with regards to lighting and sound but these are completely open to your own interpretation.

Your performers will get the chance to develop stylised or rounded characters as well as developing skills in a range of performance styles including using simple image theatre with lighting, repetition of moments, split staging and working at pace as an ensemble.

Shadows of the Past gives an apportuity to develop both characters and style in a classroom, club or GCSE performance and has provided enormous joy to students that have worked on it.
