"Have been using it for 3 years now and it has now been implemented in year 7, 8 and 9 Drama and year 7 and 8 Art and Music".

- Nicola Downs, Facebook, August 2014

"I have also bought Mark Wheelers assessment system from Clive's website which I have found incredibly useful. We had a mock ofsted last week and the inspectors we hired in really liked it as an assessment record and evidence of progress".

- Craig, Drama-UK, October 2013 - see full quote at foot of page

"We are one week in to using the Wheeller (system) and so far we both (teachers) love it! The students are really motivated by the group work and co-operation marks and it is lovely to see students working hard to keep their points / being disappointed when they lose some and actively working hard to not lose anymore :-). Once again a brilliant recommendation so thank you"

About the Resource

Mark Wheeller has developed and used this assessment system with great success over a period of time. It sets out clear assessment criteria which fit any scheme of work and introduces a colour-coded chart which instantly shows students and staff their current performance levels. This can then be related to GCSE grade boundaries (any board) to give an indication of GCSE exam success. Integral to the system is the promotion of excellent behaviour amongst students so that the work is the focus.

Clive Hulme has taken the Mark's assessment method and used it as the basis for producing a fully automated spreadsheet - imaginatively named the Wheellersheet! Imagine being asked by SLT to produce data showing how many girls with SEN are achieving at or above target in the whole of Year 8. How long would that take you currently, if you could do it at all? With the Wheellersheet it takes less than 30 seconds to print out the information.

All the "programming" has been done for you. You simply need the ability to type, copy and paste.

The Wheellersheet:

  • colour codes the students the moment a mark is entered on the system, based on the most recent GCSE grade boundaries;
  • handles every student in the school, not just one group;
  • makes the data sortable to reflect achievement by gender / race / teaching group / assessment number / SEN and many more categories;
  • automatically flags up your top achieving students;
  • automatically ranks the whole year group;
  • provides data on demand for each teacher, student, the HOD and SLT on current and historic performance (of students and staff);
  • is totally customisable for your school's needs.

You can download a sample for this resource here.

I also use Mark's spreadsheet - it's great for easily looking at a class and year group and even SoW that is or isn't successful because of the colour coding.

About the Authors

Mark has written plays and musicals since his schooldays at Marlwood School, Bristol.  No rock bands would play his songs so he wrote musicals to get them performed!  Most remain unknown but his plays went on to achieve success.Too Much  Punch for Judy (1987) is one of the most performed contemporary plays in the world having been performed over 5000 times in its short life. Edexcel list his texts as being amongst the most popular for study in GCSE Drama exams. He has over 30 years' teaching experience, which was charted in his popular 2010 book Drama Schemes (Rhinegold).

Clive is the owner of this website which he has run since taking early retirement in 2009.

"I have always resisted books and homework at KS3. My argument is that my staff do so much extra curricular work and teach significantly more classes than an English or maths teacher, it would be impossible to expect them to mark KS3 books as well. We were criticised slightly on this last year as part of the department review. As a result we have introduced a self assessment and target sheet at the end of every half term so that staff can offer some written feedback and track progress. I have also brought Mark Wheelers assessment system from Clive's website which I have found incredibly useful. We had a mock ofsted last week and the inspectors we hired in really liked it as an assessment record and evidence of progress". - Craig, Drama-UK, October 2013
