About the Resource

This is an adaptation of a short story by Katherine Mansfield whose works often feature on English GCSE specifications.

It deals with many themes, among them class assumptions, personal development and emerging ideas of feminism. It gives great opportunities for exploration of the following:

adapting an existing story;

language and characterisation from a different time period;

staging, with multiple locations needed;

costume;movement;

music and lighting design

and several more depending on directorial decisions taken.

It is also suitable for presentation as a stand-alone play or as part of a Drama evening / festival / competition entry.

It has nine named characters (who could be played by seven actors with some doubling), but there are opportunities for many more in the Garden Party sequence and as villagers. Live musicians would also be a welcome possibility.
