A new, full length play by acclaimed author Paul King exclusive to r4d

About the Resource

A community of people live in the heart of a forest untouched by ‘civilisation’. Their beliefs centre on the sacred tree, whose branches hold up the sky. Village peace is suddenly shattered by the arrival of surveyors from the outside world. A motorway is to be cut through the forest. The people are bitterly divided but it is not only the community and forest that is under threat ....

‘The Tree That Holds Up the Sky’ is an allegory and a parable about climate change and the abuse of the earth’s resources. It was originally written for the Hampshire County Youth Theatre and was first performed in a circus tent in Winchester. The video extracts below are from the earlier version.

Dim lights

The play has a cast of 30 characters and it is written so that all the actors have roughly equal parts. It was originally published by Cambridge University Press in the ‘Act Now’ series and has been updated for the r4d version.
