About the Resource

This short scheme of work has been designed particularly as an introductory topic for Year 7 pupils who have recently made the transition to secondary, although it can be used for wider exploration in the context of PSHE lessons focusing on mental health and wellbeing. It could also be used as an end of year topic for Year 6 pupils before they make the transition to high school or as a TIE project taken on by older students for a younger target audience.

Set inside a fictional secondary school and following the story of the never-present ‘Crystal’, the script uses an incident which has happened off stage as the main driver for the action. Crystal has thrown a chair at Mr Hargreaves, the Maths teacher, when he confronted her about not doing her homework. Rumours are spreading around school, staff rooms are alive with gossip and answers as to the root cause of the incident are thin on the ground.

The scheme encourages pupils to speculate as to the reasons why ‘Crystal’ may have behaved in this way. It is broken down into four sessions which are intended to be delivered as a continuous scheme, however, please free to dip in and out or use this as a guide for delivery if your teaching needs require it.

The aims of the workshop are for pupils:

- To practise the skills of inference & deduction

- To practise the skill of learning lines

- To understand the nature of the rehearsal process

- To understand & reflect upon a ‘troubled’ character

- To facilitate group discussion around childhood mental health issues

About the Author

Paul Jenkins is an author, performer and poet based in Ramsbottom, Lancashire. He was Head of Drama in a Lancashire secondary school for ten years before branching out into working as a freelance practitioner in 2014. Since then he has continued to work in both Primary and Secondary School settings, developing arts work in a variety of forms – whether it be through play in a day work, creative writing workshops or acting masterclasses focusing on Shakespeare.

As well as this resource pack, Paul has worked with a number of organisations to produce classroom based activities including work on: The BBC’s Comedy Classroom project; The National Literacy Trust’s Picture the Poet tour and a resource based on his own children’s poetry collection through The Literacy Shed with My Bottom did a Burp in Class.

Paul is constantly producing new writing output with his first Novel Requires Improvement being released in May 2016 to high praise and his first collection of poetry ‘Poems from Villagetown’ reaching the Kindle top 5.

When he isn’t writing down words for other people’s pleasure, Paul runs marathons and plays the drums badly. He’s a busy bunny.
